Cogent reaffirms the strength and reliability of its stud in Aug

Cogent

The UK has published genetic indexes for dairy sires this month along with much of the rest of the world, and the Cogent stud – a leading player in cattle genetics - has come through with flying colours.

After a proof run in which the UK’s economic breeding index, £PLI, has been revised to place more emphasis on health and efficiency of production, Cogenthas risen to the challenge. Many bulls in its stud have moved up through the Profitable Lifetime Index rankings as more daughters have been added, reaffirming the quality and reliability of both the Cogent bloodlines and the UK proving system.

Wintersell Milo (Oman) has steadily climbed through the £PLI rankings as more daughters have contributed to his index, and he now joins the ranks of the international elite with a PLI of £455. He has all the qualities of health and efficiency demanded by modern breeders and rewarded in the new £PLI, and becomes Cogent’s highest proven bull on this ranking.

A recent addition to the stud is Errolston Zeus, a high-milk, high-type Bolton son who has a positive daughter Fertility Index which has helped him climb in the £PLI ranking. He is the highest bull for Type Merit in the Cogent proven line-up at +2.78.

Another barn favourite who has benefitted from the recently reformulated Fertility Index is the high type Shottle son, Woodmarsh Asterix, who now has a FI of +8.9, making him Cogent's biggest improver of daughter fertility.

An exciting new release bull is Kirkblythe Dundeel (Maestro x Shottle x Ford), who has a very balanced proof both for production and type and is the highest available Maestro son for type with over two points.

Cogent Twist reaffirms his position as a truly great bull of the Holstein breed, more than doubling the number of daughters in his proof, which now has a reliability of 99%.

“Twist has been a flagship bull for the Cogent stud for many years and he continues to uphold the values for which we stand of consistency, reliability and outstanding performance in UK conditions,” says Gerbrich Andringa from Cogent. “Like many of our bulls, he is available as sexed semen, so helping our customers to breed the heifers they need and bring their businesses the extra profits we want to help them make.”
